Jim and Mary have been supporting their church and a missionary family in Africa for years. They have a modest but comfortable estate size.
In recent weeks they have been reviewing their current estate plan and asking themselves several important questions:
- As a steward of what God has provided, how much do we need? How much is enough for our married children?
- Since God seems to have entrusted us with more than we need, what is His purpose in doing so?
- Does God have any interest in what our estate plan should include?
After thinking and praying about their conclusions, Jim and Mary decided they would like to make a significant gift to the Lord’s work. However they are concerned that they might need the funds themselves later due to illness or other personal needs.
They decide the best way to accomplish their gift is to include their church and the missionary they support in their will for a portion of their estate. This plan would assure Jim and Mary that, if necessary, they would have full access to their funds at any time. And if they do not need all the funds before the Lord calls them home, their will could direct that their church would receive a gift at their death. It also will provide a lump sum that will continue their support of the missionary in Africa for several years.
Jim and Mary feel good about their plan as it provides for their own needs and also makes one last gift.
